Stepping back in time - Westlake Secondary School

Sometime back I heard news over the Internet that Westlake Secondary School which is situated in Bradell will be merged with Bradell Secondary School. When I came to realize this, it was a few years later and the place have now been deserted for some time. I feel saddened by the news that the place I once called my school no longer stands there and so are the teachers who once taught me.

In year 2011, I tried to search over the internet for pictures and information about the school but was unable to find much. Facebook didn't have much information either. I went down to NLB to try to search the archives back then. However, they only have microfiche documents with little photos. There isn't physical yearbooks in which I can try to trace back the years when I was at Westlake Secondary. A real disappointment indeed! To think that our NLB archives will certainly have copies of yearbooks from the school is an understatment.

Today, year 2015, I again tried to search over the internet for information. I was surprised to find a Facebook paged that was finally formed. Although the Facebook Page that was created wasn't during my period, it was filled with picture of teachers who have once taught me in that school. For that, I am really happy to have been able to have finally stumble on it. In addition, I have also found additional photos of the school surroundings. Thanks to the below Facebook Page Westlake Secondary School Class 82-88

I am from Westlake Secondary School of Class 86-90. Below are some of the teachers who I can remember who actually taught me during my time there.

1. Mr Gwee - my Sec 1 Literature teacher and also my form teacher then who made the subject so
interesting to me. A very nice and patient man.

2. Mr Ho - Maths teacher to me. Not sure which year but I do remember he certainly is a funny teacher
who once mentioned about the baggy pants that was popular then, that it can put 10 chickens in
it. The whole class laughed. He made Maths interesting.

3. Mrs Tang - my Sec 1 Geography teacher. I never liked the subject coz it put me to sleep but I do
remember Mrs Tang well ;) Lucky the subject lasted for 2 years only.

4. Mr Seow - my Chinese teacher during my last few years with Westlake Secondary. A patient and nice
teacher. Fierce at times but a good teacher who never gave up on me. I will always
remember he once bet with me that if I put in lots of effort for my Chinese, I will certainly get
a B for my O Levels. I took up the challenge and I proved to him I did it.

5. Mrs D. Sigh - Home Econs teacher. A fierce teacher. If you approach her nicely, she is an alright                                       teacher. What I love about her? Well, I once offer to help her do something. When she say
Thank You to me, I felt the gratitude caming from her.

6. Ms Shamsudin - History teacher. Another fierce teacher not to be messed with.

7. Ms Han - I only remember her as my NPCC teacher. Not sure if she ever taught me Chinese coz I never                     liked her then. Ooopss ... sorry to talk bad about her. She just gave me the impression that she                      never look up to Normal Stream pupils and people always like to say that she like to act cute                        back then.
.
Those missing from the picture below

8. Ms Judy - Forgot her last name. An indian teacher who is short in height. A friendly and approachable
Science teacher, think is Chemistry. Must have came in during my time. Not sure why she is                          not in the below picture.  Do missed her tough!

9. Ms Thambaya - Forgot her last name. An indian teacher. She is slim, gentle and soft spoken teacher.
Approachable teacher. Always get bullied by the class. My English teacher and also                                      once my form teacher then.

Those who never taught me but I still remember them would be

Mrs Naidu - Very stern. I always like to watch her coach Netball. Ever once see her play. SHE IS GOOD!

Mrs Khoo Chee Eng (Principal) - There was one time that the school impose on students to talk more English instead of Mandarin. The reason being it seems to be our culture that it is normal whenever we gather with friends,  Mandarin would always come out naturally. Once I passed by the office with group of friends and she caught me speaking in Mandarin with friends. I was being pulled into the office to write a page of essay for her in English. After I graduated from Westlake Secondary School not long, I seem to heard from rumors some where, can't recall where, that Mrs Khoo passed away from an accident at home where she fell from the steps. Not sure true or not but was sad to hear that.

Below this picture was copied from the NLB archives. Wish there were more photos like yearbook of me with the class in which I have long lost all those. Sad indeed to unable to trace back!

Turning back time to year 1988 NDP

I have been walking through back in time and I came up with 1988 Singapore National Day Parade at Kallang our old National Stadium.

This very day is very special to me. In the year 1988, I was 15 years old then and in my Secondary 3 at Westlake Secondary School. This very year, our nation have plans to celebrate National Day with a topic of Flash Card. Few schools have been picked to participate in this event and my school was one of the selected ones. I remembered that we have to head there a few times to practice under the hot sun and having to seat there and hold our huge book of pages with colors. We have no idea at first that it was pages of pictures put together with everyone coorindinate to flip to the pages at the same time.

This is how it works. We will all seated across where the VIP was to be seated. Above that area, there is a small sheltered house where the person in charge will flag out his flag. When we see the flag, we will flip the pages of our flash cards to the next page and the big picture would appear. We had lots of fun then and get to enjoy watching the event through a small peep hole made through the book that was given to us. We only got home that actual day almost midnite but we had lots of fun.

A good book that bring laughter for being a KIASU mother

I recently borrowed the above book by Monica Lim, The Good, The Bad and the PSLE from the library.

This is a very interesting and well written book by a local author. I don't normally read a lot of books written by local authors and that doesn't really mean I am bias. It is just that I noticed that not all local writers can write interesting topics that can keep a reader like me interested long enough to finish the whole book.

After reading this book, one can tell that you are not alone as being a Kiasu Mother. In today's generation, it is normal for any mothers who would want best for their child and to have the best for their child's future. This book mentions the trials of the author going through handling her own two children, one boy and one girl. One is smarter and the other is a bit handful.Read to understand how much a mother would stretch to give the best to her children.

MOE allows school to decide, use of WhatsApp!

This is not new! With new technology of smartphones and all kinds of apps available to us these days, Secondary School are also recommending students to use WhatsApp for discussing school work with each other. What's more the app is FREE! However, you have to have a smartphone and data plan to go with it in order to be able to used the WhatsApp. This is not provided by the school. Funny! This can be really costly to parents. Smartphones these days don't come cheap. A second hand smartphone can cost you few hundred bucks. Not forgetting that you need to have data plans in order to get connected to WhatsApp. The cheapest data plan would cost about $30.00 but then it only have  100MB of local data. These can be used up pretty fast. An example of Youth Plan by Singtel

I find this impossible to accept! When I went online in search of approved MOE school platform, I came to realize that I have been outdated with this. Other parents have also raised this issue to MOE. Sad to realize that MOE replied that they allow school these days to decide on the platform to be used which means it is out of their hands and that is how WhatsApp come into picture. Read this replies from others who have raised to MOE about the above issue HERE

Like as if it is not stressful enough that things are getting more expensive and everybody is trying to keep a close eye on what is spent these days and school is adding expenses like this to parents. No wonder Singapore is getting so tensed up with tons of upset people.

Transfer School - Secondary

Lately been having thoughts of transferring my older child into another Secondary School.

Went online in search of others view in this area of transferring school request and have found nothing much on it. However, I did came across one page on a forum that mentioned about a transfer that was placed and took one year for the transfer to be processed by MOE. I am shocked and sad to know that it takes so long for a request to be processed through MOE.

Seeing that I am not going any where with clearing my doubts on the procedure to request for transfer of school, I called MOE to equire.

MOE Customer Service told me that to request for a transfer I need to approach the school myself. If the school have place, the child have to take a placement test. So I asked, "MOE don't step in to help?" There wasn't a direct reply back as to "NO"  from the Customer Service. She just reply as MOE only help if there is a change in address. I am rolling my eyes with anger already but didn't say anything but ok and hang up the phone.

Now I know! Guess MOE is of no help regardless what reason you may want to request for a transfer school unless you move from one place to another in Singapore. This have also given me another view of, if you insist of transferring school, go move into another house.

Chinese New Year

Chinese New Year is around the corner! This year is a Goat year.

During this time of the year, spring cleaning always comes in for every household. This is a common practice that everyone do a thorough cleaning to bring in a new year for good luck through out the whole year. I am no exception to this practice as well.

In addition, many are busy with getting ready to invite the Chinese New Year with goodies and getting ready for stuff to be used for the Reunion Dinner. Some of the goodies that must have during Chinese New Year for visitors will include bak kwa (pork jerk), pineapple tarts, kuih bulu, love letters, etc. As for Reunion Dinner, some of the must have is abalone, scallop, mushrooms, fatt choy, fish, etc.

For me, as usual, we always head down to factory at Woodlands to get our bak kwa. For past few years, we have been getting our bak kwa from Fragrance on and off. This year, we are trying out New Peng Hiang 新品香. We got to know this brand of Bak Kwa from Singapore Expo Food Fair. We bought 500g from them as it was only $10.00 at the Food Fair and it tasted real good. Thus, we purchase from them this year as it is cheap at $20.00 for 500g. Have yet to try how real good it taste during Chinese New Year season.

While shopping at the factory area at Woodlands, we also drop in to other factory that are selling steamboat stuff and goodies. This year, the price of the goodies are way too pricy. I noticed for a bottle of pineapple at factory can cost up to $15.00 and other goodies are almost at that price if not, it will be $2.00 or $3.00 lesser than that price. I refuse to pay that price for such goodies seeing that I am able to make it myself. Thus, I am behind the oven making goodies myself.

As for Reunion Dinner, we initially was discussing to having it outside. However, after doing some research online, I noticed that having a Reunion Dinner outside may not be a good idea coz it seems to be in a rush to have to complete the meal. In addition, for the price I am paying for a Reunion Dinner, don't expect every dish to be what you want. So might as well have it at home. For one, we don't have to rush through the meal and pay the price for a costly dinner we would not enjoy. This means, I will be having fun behind the stove and sweating my butts off.

Well, do hope that this year Chinese New Year will bring me good luck and smooth throught out the year.

Wishing All Who Read My Blog A Prosporus Chinese New Year! HUAT!

Korea Drama - 49 Days

Korean Drama is craze right now!

Everybody or almost everybody is onto Korean Drama these days. I must say that Korean actors and actress that are shown in some of the Korean Drama truly is handsome and pretty. No wonder it is a craze right now. I am not usually a big fan of Korea Drama but when the story line catch me, it will draw my attention to catch on to the episodes.

Thus far, I have only seen really two Korea Drama that have interested me.

1. My Ugly Sweetie - Funny Drama with a kick out of it

2. 49 Days  - Sad Drama

This 49 days Drama truly is a meaning one. It is about this girl who have all in her life. A happy and loving family and friends that are close to her. When she ran into an accident and was in coma and her spirit left her body. She bumped into a man who is a death collector. He told her that in order for her spirit to return back to her body, she needs to collect 3 pure tears in 49 days from those who loved her truly and these 3 tears are not to be from parents or siblings. In order to complete this process, the death collector told her that she can borrow a body during this time and she have to earn her own money to get through this 49 days. During this process of 49 days she also came to realize who are her true friend who stand close to her in time of need and who have already betrayed her. A rather sad ending but it is sure worth watching.

Awesome portal - Toggle SG

I have been hooked on Toggle SG for some time. Am very happy to say that this is an awesome way for Singaporeans to catch up with programs by Media Corp. This is especially good for those who are overseas and want to catch some home town programs that would make them feel at home even though they are far away from home. I also find it very useful to be able to catch up with local news to keep in touch with things that are happening back home which I have missed especially the news that is on Channel 8.

Previously there was a site called XinMSN that is similar to Toggle SG which allows you to catch up on missed television programs by Media Corp. However, after some time, this portal seems dead without any further updates especially for the Channel 8 news 6:30pm which I love catching.

So if you are not on Toggle SG, you'd better sign up for it coz it is FREE. You get to catch up with many programs online. For those who are overseas, you too can get onto Toggle SG too. You just need to change some settings by adding your identification number to identify that you are a Singaporean and you are all set to watch the programs. I do hope that this portal would continue to be kept alive and updated at all times so that television craze like me can always catch up with missed programs where ever and when ever.

Mammogram for the first time

I have reached the age for doing a Mammogram Screening. Thus, scheduled a month ahead in November to visit the Polyclinic in January for a screening.

First time screening and don't know what to expect. Nothing was mentioned over the internet by others who have done this procedure about the screening as to how it was like.

Well, Mammogram Screening at the Polyclinic was different. I had to go to the X-ray department and wait for my name to be called. They don't have a number issued to you and wait for the number to appear on the screen. The cost of having a Mammogram Screening is $107.00. Thank God I am a Singaporean and the government have subsidy for this screening of $57.00. Thus, I only have to pay $50.00 for this screening.

The process is like an X-ray. You have to remove metal things away from the part that you need to be X-rayed on. However, this is a slight different in a way that the machine is able to rotate itself to the angle they want to be X=rayed. So, expect to have each breast x-rayed twice at different angles. It is indeed a painful process I must say. The reason being you have to push forward for the breast to rest on the machine. Imagine that the machine camera on top  have a cover to protect the camera screen, your face have to be pressed on that screen for the x=ray to be done correctly. This is also not one of the problem. After the nurse place your breast in the correct position, the machine will start to clamp down and I do mean clamp down to press hard on the breast to get the x-ray. Imagine the pressure coming from a machine! DAMN! OUCH!!! Then  another one shot on the same breast going through the same process. After all these pressing, I am in pain! Not forgetting each shot I have to hold my breath. This is causing me dizzy!

& this have to done yet again the following year until 49 years old. After which would be once every 2 years from 50 onwards. Phobia already! The results will be out in a months time.

MOE Direct School Placement Procedure for overseas personnel

Well, this school placement process should be easy but it SUCKS BIG TIME!

Ok ... We were not able to make it for the School Placement Test for the one that was set by MOE which happens one in Oct and Dec every year. We applied direct for school placement through MOE. We have three school choices to pick but then MOE came back to us with a school which is no where really walking distance but have to change bus to get there. As there isn't a choice we took the one assigned by MOE.

We arrived back home and head to the school MOE has given us and to learn that they only have slots for Express stream. I like HAR! Why MOE give me a school that only have Express stream? Isn't that a waste of time? Only one slot and not test for both slot! Anyway, we went ahead with the test in hope that we could be lucky that our child would really get in. I wasn't hopeful but have to try right?

So, my child have to take 2 test. One English paper which consist of 3 paper in fact. One letter writing, One Compo, One open ended comprehension. NO MCQ at all! Maths paper also no MCQ but all problem sums. Seem to understand from my child the Maths seems to be on Sec 1 based. Didn't see it myself then can't argue on that she only PSLE stage how to understand Sec 1 Math.

Were told that they would have the results by Tuesday. Waited and waited whole Tuesday, no news. Send email, no reply. Damn! Why can't some people reply emails. At least say something we are still processing or something instead of ignore. DAMN! Hate emails! I should have annoy them with phone calls instead. I called MOE for assistance and the girl who assisted me was extremely nice who go all the way to help me find out from the school. She said that the school will have the results on Wednesday. Ok... waited and waited ... still no news. Damn! Give up! Go find it myself lar! MOE isn't really helpful to making things move. If the school rule everything, what the HELL we need MOE ever for! Do something lah MOE! You preach that you want every children to be in school but it certainly don't look like leh. I am waiting and waiting for some ridiculous procedure to move. Time is running out!

Still, from my understanding from this school, looking for another school for placement, your may child may need to take another school placement test. I like, what the HELL! Can't you all use the same result to evaluate meh? This is utterly demoralizing. MOE what are you doing? Trying to teach a child to be a better person or killing them silently by demoralizing them?

Guess, to make things move sometimes you have to move it yourself! I am going to to ask each school myself! Depressing!

Hopefully I don't have resort to ending myself up in the Meet the People Session to bang some tables. Sure it would get ugly.

Back Home to Singapore!

Finally back home. Thought I would be looking forward to better days. Guess that is never going to happen in my remaining life.

Flew back from Arizona on 31 Mar 2014 and arrived back in Singapore on Wednesday. Thursday my girl went to assigned school Woodgrove Secondary to take the placement test MOE have arranged for her. She sat the English paper on Thursday and took the Math on Friday. After that, we waited and waited for results to come out. The school say Tuesday they will let us know but didn't came. I called MOE for assistance and they say Wednesday. Again waited the whole day, still never come with results. I don't understand why is the hold up? If you not going to give my girl the slot then don't hold up.

Came back to the house to understand that it is infested with roaches. Previous two tenants didn't care to clean nor take care of the house. This is what you get for renting house out. Things were also missing. If spoil, we were supposed to be inform about it.  I certainly don't believe my curtain would have spoil, and certainly not a Little Tikes table too even though it has been with us for years.

Still have more to do for the house before finally settling in.

Returning Singaporeans - School Procedure

Being attached 2 years overseas for children that are coming to age to leaving the Primary School when they return has left me with lots of stress.

Firstly, trying to deal with Ministry of Education (MOE) procedures is already enough to cause the stress. It sounds simple from the website but they have so many hidden areas that are not clear. I tried doing search over the internet but couldn't find one that really answers to my question. I have to clarify again and again with MOE. I send a few e-mails to them and sometimes the e-mail don't come back with a satisfied reply to my question and I have call them. This alone is enough of agitation as waiting for the e-mail to come back with a reply takes 3-4 days and when they don't come back with the answer you want, it will take another few more days.

After going through all these agitation, it has finally been clear. I thought it would be good to share this information with those who also encounter the same and in hope this will help in some way to clarify MOE's - Overseas Returning Singaporeans Procedure instead of going round and round in their website.

If your child is heading to Primary 1 when you return, this is very clear cut. If you have registered your child into the school of your choice, you can enter with no problem. That is if you are returning before the school term starts. However, if you return after school start, be sure to apply for Leave of Absence (LOA) as this will ensure a place for your child and he/she can join back to the school with no issues.

As for other levels eg. Primary 2,Primary 3...., this is easier. You can join back if you have LOA with no problems too.

Ok... for Primary 6, this gets complicated. If you are to return before the Primary School Leaving Examination (PSLE) which starts in August, then there aren't any issue. If not, you can apply for the School Placement Exercise for Returning Singaporeans — Secondary (SPERS-Sec)This examination takes place somewhere else which is not within MOE building from what I understand from the website. Registration usually starts in July. The examination will take place in October. If you are unable to make it for the October, there is also one in December. This examination will test the child English (Composition and Main Paper) and Mathematics.

Well, if you are unable to make it for the SPERS, MOE recommends that you approach the school directly of your choice for placement. However, I have read a few reviews that people have encountered problems in putting their child back into the school. I am not sure though is it because they try to put their child into good schools that is why they are encountering problems. MOE do assist to parents in school placement but they recommend you to do it yourself. If you encounter problems, you can approach them but this will take a while for them to process. Alternatively, you can also apply online for school placement but your child must not have an existing LOA.

Another Post

I have now created a new post due to a new assignment given to me. Read all about the post Life in Arizona

Back on track!

I have left my company and in search of my new given assignment by God! I am indeed sad to leave but some things overweigh it. Still, the frastration of things at company always gets to me. The frastration of this particular person taking me for granted that "I will always do for him" and the other would be a great pretender.

One thing I am really glad about is that, my boss rewarded me something I was thinking if I would ever get. The farewell for me was indeed a good one. Let's say that I am extremely happy once in my life coz it shows that I am being appreciated. Another goal in my life I have complished.

The girl who took over my job wasn't really interested. Always not around. Took me for granted that I would help her out. Made so many calls without even trying to use her head. Not sure if she even got one or she just one that wait to be served. I am suprise that she was once a PA. Must be sit on the boss leg type one if not how she managed, I really do not know. Nonetheless, as I predicted, she got fired eventually! Guess she never know that never play this company for a fool coz they are not local company that would tolerate such outrageous behavior.

GOD indeed has his plans for me!

If you have been following my blog, you will noticed that we were to go US in year 09 but somehow due to some selfish jerk who contest at the last moment, we never did. I was in so much anger ... but I continued to move on and be happy.

Now it is all clear! God indeed has his plans for me! I came to work in this far away place in Jurong Island thinking it was temporary only and landed up working there 3 years. Who would of thought of it. However, in one month time, I am leaving this place. Why? Plans from God have come true or through for me. AMEN! Why I say that is that perhaps it was my boss who ask God for help and God heard her call and send me there to help her. God didn't want me to go as it is not time yet and she needed the help in which I can render to her so much. 3 years pass and she is now being promoted and soon moving on to US and soon news for my husband to go US too came too with someone powerful enough to help him out. Co-incident? I think not! Guess, we are indeed BLESSED! AMEN! So God you haven't forgotten about me and my prayers! Ah-Li-Lu Yah!

Son's Birthday @ School

Today went to son's school to celebrate his birthday with his friends. He was very happy! Its Tuesday and there was suppose to be an assembly. As I was there, he tried to escape it. I tried all to trick him into going but failed. Sigh.. this boy is really hard to teach. The cake was huge and couldn't finish. Again I leave the cake there for later the teacher can eat. I had a hard time carrying it over to school coz it was heavy and I had to carry the goodie bags and take the bus. Lucky bus not crowded. The day before I collect the cake at Northpoint Yishun after work, people at the bus was very in-cosiderate coz no one give me the seat even they say me holding the big cake. The world have lack of good people these days. Anyway, lucky one woman stand up and give me a seat .. inside one... though I prefer outside one coz my cake is big how to seat on my lap? It was uncomfortable... at least she offer.. so I take...

Then you still say the same thing as last time. My guess was right... I only have to say I am doing well, they will be on the rush.. Never change coz it happens to everybody... Sigh ... & that is why I never stop the person I catch eye while walking on streets coz this is what I know would happen. Can't really blame them. I would do that too!

Failure as mom ?

Just came back from the hospital! Sigh .... so my son let history repeat itself. No Thanks to my girl! She dropped some cotton buds on the floor and my son picked up and stick to his ear.

Brought him to the old house 24 hours clinic as the My Family clinic was already filled with people. Haven't had my dinner yet and have to deal with this going on in my life again. Doctor struggle for past 20 mins and son was hysterical when he see the pair of scissors going into his ear to pull whatever is stuck inside. Doctor lost his patience and was scolding him. Hahhhahha... at least someone knows the aggitation I am going through. Arghhhhh... son refuse to co-operate. So, no choice, bring him to KKH (Hospital down here that deals best with kids). Catch a cab there after leaving my older one with nanny. Where the HELL are the cabs when you need them? Waited and waited.. God .. finally came one. Lucky he didn't say not going.

When to hospital wait again... ok.. noticed people are blocking the damn number! Can you quit it! I am watching for my number. Arghhh... Finally took out a bit. Still have to see the doctor the next day again to see if he can remove the remainder. Then also son not co-operative... Argggghhh... ok... Monday have to go back hospital again and in total $60.00 bucks spent... plus this monday cost $ 420.00 from Medisave. All these have not include the cab fair. Sickening! Why my life is always like that! GOD .. haven't I suffered enough.. you must test me time and time again? I head can't take the stress already! Have MERCY!

2 weeks new home

2 weeks into new home and neighbors seem very unfriendly. Never seem to see them with a smile on their face. As we owe them money! Never mind at least no more the stupid irritating neighbor.
